Photo Requirements for U.S. Passport

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy wish to encourage U.S. Passport applicants the importance of the quality of the photograph submitted. Following is the description that a photograph for a U.S. passport application must meet:

The photographs must be 2”x2” inches (5x5 cm) in size.

The image size measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (including hair) must be not less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) and no more than 1 3/8 (3.5cm).

Photographs must be front view, full face and printed on thin non-glossy paper with light, plain background.

These can be color or black & white.

Photographs taken in front of busy, patterned, or dark backgrounds will not be accepted.
