Remarks by Ambassador Barclay Marine Corps Ball
November 11, 2005
Good evening,
The United States Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775 by a resolution of the Continental Congress and tonight we commemorate its 229th anniversary.
I am very pleased to be here to celebrate the founding of the Marine Corps and to pay tribute to the young men and women who stand guard over our Embassy. The Marine Corps is essential to advancing freedom, protecting democracy, and promoting US national interests around the world. I am consistently impressed by their professionalism and dedication, and comforted by their presence.
Our Marine Security Detachment, aside from their official duties and responsibilities, also plays an important role in maintaining the esprit de corps of the Mission by hosting happy hours, special events like this magnificent gala and the wonderful Halloween party that Deedee and I recently attended.
On behalf of President Bush, the Department of State, the Embassy community, and the American People I would like to express our profound gratitude for your exemplary service to our nation.
Happy Birthday!
