Itinerant Library Project starts in San Miguel

FEBRUARY 16, 2007.-

On Friday, February 16, several representatives from the American Embassy and the Centro Cultural Salvadoreño inaugurated in the city of San Miguel, the Itinerant Library Bernardo Melero. This project was created to promote reading and American culture among young and adult populations in the Oriental zone of El Salvador.

The inauguration was attended by Marjorie Stern, Cultural Officer, Quentin Farrand, Executive President of Centro Cultural Salvadoreño, as well as representatives from CONCULTURA, Alcaldía Municipal in San Miguel, and the National Civil Police. Also, as special guest, the event counted with the attendance of Doña Angelita, widow of Mr. Bernardo Melero in whose memory the Itinerant Library was named after.

The Itinerant Library will be available the rest of the year in selected Casas de la Cultura (local libraries) in the four Departments in Eastern El Salvador: Usulután, San Miguel, Morazán and La Unión. Its collections include Biographies, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, and books on American literature, geography and History.

 

 

 

Meet Mr. Bernardo Melero:

Bernardo Melero García (1930 - 1997) worked at the the American Embassy in San Salvador for over three decades as Director of the USIS book program.

His main activities included the promotion and assistance in the development of academic and public libraries in El Salvador. He also participated in book fairs and exhibitions.
