Laments Death of Salvadoran Soldier in Iraq
The United States Government was deeply saddened
by the death of Salvadoran soldier Natividad Méndez
Ramos while on duty with the international coalition in Iraq.
We
pray for him and for the speedy recovery of the 12 Salvadoran
soldiers wounded. These casualties took place during a violent
demonstration in Nayaf, Iraq, in which many others were also
injured.
We wish to express to the family of Natividad Méndez
Ramos not only our profound sorrow but also the gratitude
of the American people for his great sacrifice. This valiant
Salvadoran soldier gave his life so that Iraqis might enjoy
the peace and the stability of democracy, a right that Salvadorans
won just over a decade ago in their own country and wish
to share with a people, halfway around the world, who are
only beginning to taste freedom.
The United States of America greatly appreciates the continued
support of the Government of El Salvador in this time
of great difficulty. Today, we share the grief of the
Salvadoran
people. If, however, we are to ensure an ultimate victory
over the scourges of terrorism and dictatorship, we must
continue to stand together in the face of adversity.
Despite setbacks and tragedies such as we have seen today,
together
we will win the war against terrorism and make the
world a safer place for us all. The American people thank
the
people of El Salvador for their enduring support and
friendship.
