over a Veteran’s Day celebration at the US Embassy
in San Salvador the evening of November 11 th, 2004.
In his remarks, Secretary Rumsfeld paid tribute to the men
and women who have served in the US armed forces and gave
heartfelt praise for the troops of the international coalition
that are still in Iraq helping the new Iraqi government lead
political transition in that country.
Secretary Rumsfeld thanked El Salvador for its contributions
in the war on terror and commended El Salvador for surviving
its own civil war, becoming a stable democracy and remaining
a strong ally of the United States. “El Salvador is
a strong ally of the global war on terror, and a nation that
understands well the global struggle for liberty and democracy”,
he said.
Along with Ambassador H. Douglas Barclay, Defense Secretary
Rumsfeld laid a wreath in front of a monument to U.S. personnel,
including about 20 service members, killed during El Salvador’s
civil war. “The fight is not easy. It never is. It requires
patience. And it has costs”, Secretary Rumsfeld said
before laying the wreath.
