U.S.
Embassy Officials Discuss ILEA with FMLN
June 9,
2005
*****

Deputy Chief of Mission Philip French, accompanied by
two Embassy officers, met with representatives of the FMLN
Party on June 10 to discuss the opposition party's concerns
about the proposed International Law Enforcement Academy
(ILEA) in El Salvador.
The Embassy officers emphasized that
an ILEA in El Salvador would bring together teachers and
students from throughout the Hemisphere to improve regional
cooperation in law enforcement. Like the the other ILEAS
currently operating in Hungary, Thailand, Botswana, the
Academy would train civilian law enforcement officers in
combating
drug trafficking, alien smuggling, trafficking in persons,
and other forms of international crime while promoting
adherence to internationally recognized human rights standards.
