On April 18, 2007, U.S. Ambassador Charles L. Glazer and a delegation of U.S. and Salvadoran officials visited four communities that will benefit from the $461 million Millennium Challenge Account compact for environmentally and economically sustainable development of El Salvador's Northern Zone.
Traveling by automobile along the unpaved route that will become part of the highway that will connect communities within the Northern Zone as well as beyond it, the delegation attended community meetings in Ciudad Barrios, San Luis de la Reina, Ciudad Dolores, and Sensuntepeque.
In order to gain a better understanding of the economic and human-development conditions in the Northern Zone, the delegation members met the Mayors, representatives of the coffee, farming, and other sectors, civil society groups, and other actors whose engagement will be crucial to the timely and efficient completion of the development projects and to attracting additional tourism and investment in the Northern Zone.
In addition to Ambassador and Mrs. Glazer and their guests, the delegation included the Salvadoran Ministers of Agriculture and the Environment and the other Board members of implementing agency FOMILENIO. Also in the delegation were the Minister of Education, members of the Salvadoran National Development Commission, and officials of the
U.S.-based Millennium Challenge Corporation.
