Ambassador Launches Healthcare Assistance Activities

During his visit May 3 to a Medical Readiness Training Exercise (MEDRETE) in Santa Ana, Ambassador Charles L. Glazer launched the United States Government’s healthcare assistance activities for this year in El Salvador.
The Ambassador announced a total of four MEDRETEs which will be carried out in different areas of the country, and highlighted the arrival in July of the US Naval Ship “Comfort,” a large, floating hospital.
In each of these important events, US doctors and other health workers, in cooperation with local authorities, will provide free healthcare services to thousands of underprivileged Salvadorans, including many in remote areas of the country. Since 1993, the US Military, in partnership with Salvadoran authorities has carried out 52 MEDRETEs in El Salvador, benefiting more than one million Salvadorans.
The MEDRETE currently underway in Santa Ana taking place in Paraje Galán from April 30 through May 3. On May 4 and 5 it will be in Masahuat, and from May 7 through 9 it will provide healthcare services in Planes de la Laguna.
The next MEDRETES will be carried out in Cabañas (May 9 - May 25), Sonsonate (June 9 – June 23), and Acajutla (July 25- August 1), where the Comfort hospital ship will dock.
