Ambassador Participates in Inauguration of FOMILENIO Office
July 20, 2007

*****

On Friday, July 20, Ambassador Charles L. Glazer and Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Vice President John Hewko accompanied Salvadoran President Antonio Saca and FOMILENIO officials at the inauguration ceremony of MCC’s implementing office in El Salvador.

Both Ambassador Glazer and John Hewko praised El Salvador for its firm commitment to progress.  “I arrived in El Salvador only six months ago, and without a doubt I can say that I, as well as the government I represent, are impressed with El Salvador's commitment to reach the objectives and goals of this northern development project”, said Ambassador Glazer.  John Hewko added in his remarks to the audience: “Each one of my trips to El Salvador fills me with excitement, because each time I come I find new things and signs of change and progress”.

“The inauguration of FOMILENIO’s office marks a new stage in the implementation of the Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact with El Salvador”, said Fomilenio president Eduardo Zablah at the inauguration ceremony.

El Salvador is one of 41 developing countries that have qualified to receive assistance from the U.S.-government-funded MCC based on its commitment to sound political and economic policies.  The government of El Salvador has decided to devote the $460 million in MCC assistance to the country's northern zone, which has long trailed the rest of the country in economic development.
