In an in-house ceremony, the US Embassy in El Salvador remembered the 3,000 people who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
During the short ceremony, Chargé d’Affaires Michael Butler read President Bush’s proclamation for Patriot day and reminded everyone of diplomacy’s importance after the 2001 terrorist attacks: “There are thousands of Americans working tirelessly each day to protect our country and further the cause of freedom and democracy around the world. Those Americans include the people serving in this Embassy and all our embassies around the world, where diplomacy is America's first line of defense against murderers and extremists like those who struck on September 11, 2001”.
After observing a minute of silence in honor of the more than 3,000 victims, the Marine Guard Detachment lowered the flag to half staff.
