US Military Joins Salvadorans in Offering Health Care Assistance on Conchaguita Island
December 10, 2007

*****

During his visit to a Medical Readiness Training Exercise (MEDRETE) in Conchaguita Island in la Union, US Ambassador Charles L. Glazer closed the United States Government’s healthcare assistance activities for this year in El Salvador.

Ambassador Glazer reported that over 40,000 Salvadorans had been helped by the assistance provided by the different MEDRETES carried out in El Salvador this year. The Ambassador highlighted the assistance given last July when the US Naval Ship “USNS Comfort” visited and performed over one hundred surgeries in Sonsonate.

In each of these medical exercises, U.S. doctors and other health care workers, in cooperation with local authorities, provided free healthcare services to thousands of underprivileged Salvadorans, including many in remote areas of the country.  Since 1993, the US Military, in partnership with Salvadoran authorities has carried out almost 60 MEDRETEs in El Salvador, benefiting more than one million Salvadorans.

In 2007, MEDRETEs were carried out in Santa Ana, Cabañas, Sonsonate and La Union.
