U.S. Embassy Donates Books to Salvadoran Prison
December 14, 2007
*****
The U.S. Embassy's Cultural Affairs Officer, Marjorie Stern, recently donated books to the Penitentiary La Esperanza (popularly known as Mariona Prison).
Ms. Stern participated in the graduation ceremony after being named this year's "god mother" of the "General Francisco Menéndez" school where 54 inmates graduated from several programs this year.
Some of the students earned year completion course certificates while several earned High School diplomas. During the graduation event on December 7th, Ms. Stern presented gifts to those who graduated at the top of their class. Ms. Stern also presented a book donation for the library of the penitentiary.
During 2007, the U.S. Embassy had provided over 150 books (mainly literature and reference materials) to the penitentiary's library.
