U.S. Navy personnel from the Forward Operating Location at Comalapa arrived at the “Hogar de Niños San Vicente de Paul”, an orphanage housing approximately 300 children in San Jacinto to deliver toys and goodwill.
U.S. Ambassador Charles L. Glazer helped hand out toys and spoke to the children saying, “These Sailors and contractors are in El Salvador to work against the scourge of narcotics for the benefit of children of all nations. As many of the individuals have children of their own who are not here with them, they are happy to share some Christmas spirit with you”. The Christmas party included a shopping spree for a group of teenage girls, an appearance by Joselito the Clown, and a pizza party for the orphans. Santa Claus even made a special appearance.
The U.S. Navy's Project Handclasp is an official program established in 1962 to promote mutual understanding, respect, and goodwill through direct person-to-person contact between Americans and citizens of other lands. Project Handclasp coordinates transportation and delivery of humanitarian, educational, and goodwill materials donated by private citizens throughout the United States for distribution to charitable organizations in foreign countries.
