Inauguration of the Itinerant Library in Sensuntepeque
March 11, 2008
*****

Marjorie Stern, U.S. Embassy’s Cultural Affairs Officer, inaugurated the 2008 Itinerant Library at the Cultural Center in Sensuntepeque, Department of Cabañas.
The event was attended by over 75 people including representatives from CONCULTURA and the Sensuntepeque Mayor’s Office, special guests, and school children from local public and private schools. The Itinerant Library, a joint project between the Embassy and Centro Cultural Salvadoreño Americano, consists of collections of books on American history, geography, literature and government, as well as general reference works, available for an entire month in the different communities visited during the year.
The Itinerant Library will remain in Sensuntepeque until March 28, when it will travel to the Cultural Center in Chinameca, department of San Miguel.
This is the second year that the U.S. Embassy has sponsored the Itinerant Library project, which has visited ten Cultural Centers in the departments of Usulután, San Miguel, Morazán, and La Unión in the eastern part of the country. The project’s main objectives are to promote U.S. culture as well as reading habits within the communities visited. Due to the success obtained by the program in 2007, this year there will be two Itinerant Library collections simultaneously visiting communities throughout the country.
