Deputy Secretary Negroponte Meets with President Saca

Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte finished a two-day visit to El Salvador on June 4, meeting with Salvadoran President Elías Antonio Saca and holding a roundtable with press. On June 3, Ambassador Negroponte met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Argueta de Barillas, Minister of Defense Molina and Attorney General Safie. He also met representatives from the business sector and civil society.
In public remarks after their meeting this morning, both Deputy Secretary Negroponte and President Saca highlighted the close, cooperative relationship the United States and El Salvador share and the many family, cultural and economic ties between the two countries.
In his various meetings, Ambassador Negroponte discussed a wide variety of bilateral and regional issues such as the Merida Initiative to fight transnational crime, commercial relations, the CAFTA-DR free trade agreement, and development cooperation.
