FOL Comalapa Personnel Donate to El Salvador Orphanage

Sailors at U.S. Navy Forward Operating Location (FOL) Comalapa joined efforts with Project Handclasp for a community relations project at the Padre Vito De Guarato Orphanage in San Salvador June 27.

"This event made me proud to be a service member," said Storekeeper 1st Class (SW) Vince Magalit.

Project Handclasp works closely with the active duty Navy commands to collect and distribute donated items to people in need around the globe. It relies on donations from individuals, organizations and corporations to collect items, including medical supplies, toys, books and hygiene items. These items are then transported worldwide via U.S. Navy ships and U.S. Air Force planes.

FOL Comalapa raised donations among command personnel, including several U.S. contractors, host nationals and Sailors from Patrol Squadrons (VP) 10, 40, 5 and 4.
The donations helped pay for food items and extra supplies. The group also donated two Project Handclasp pallets of miscellaneous items, including personal care items, food and medical supplies.

The orphanage is home to 138 disabled children. Most of its funding comes from donations and fundraisings.

Lt. Kevin Borkert, FOL Comalapa executive officer and Chief Yeoman (SW/AW) Byron Shambley, FOL Comalapa administrative officer, said it was a gratifying experience to give financial and moral support.

Angelica Cruz, the orphanage's social worker, noted the children at the orphanage are also preparing for the Special Olympics that will be held in mid-July in El Salvador.
